Cyberinfrastructure and GIS

Synopsis

Cyberinfrastructure and GIS, or CyberGIS in short, has been perhaps the most important research direction in GIScience in the big data era. This is evident in the US NSF toward a Cyberinfrastructure for 21st Century Science and Engineering (CIF21) and the CyberGIS project that based in UIUC. The advancement of technology, sensor network, as well as the proliferation of social network platforms have transformed the type and the volume of data collected on the daily basis. Such advancement engendered a set of new research questions in several fronts, including those that are of technological, societal, and organization nature.

My current work in Cyberinfrastructure and GIS involves developing approaches for integrate data from diverse sources, mechanisms to handle data provenance (the history of data), and parallel algorithms for supporting exploratory data analysis.
